Surface Water Reservoir & Piped Water Supply at Nayapara, Teknaf, Cox's Bazar

Safe water is essential for life, public health and sustainable community development. Recognizing the critical importance of reliable access to safe drinking water, the Surface Water Reservoir & Piped Water Supply at Nayapara, Teknaf, Cox's Bazar project was developed to strengthen water supply infrastructure for both the Rohingya community and surrounding host communities.

The project was implemented under the Emergency Assistance Project (EAP) by the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under Grant No. 0582. Construction was carried out by AWCL-JI JV, with support from Zi Group.

Due to the limited availability of groundwater and freshwater sources in the project area, a reliable and sustainable surface water treatment and distribution system was required. The project therefore incorporated a modern Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP), water reservoir and piped water supply infrastructure to help provide a dependable source of treated water for the communities within the project coverage area.

Modern Surface Water Treatment and Storage System

The project includes a modern Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) with a treatment capacity of 200 m³ per hour, equivalent to approximately 200,000 liters of water per hour.

The treatment system uses a coagulation-flocculation and multigrade-based filtration process to treat raw surface water before distribution. Water is collected through a floating pumping station, providing an effective method for drawing water from the designated surface water source and transferring it to the treatment facility.

To support water availability and long-term storage, a fully modernized water reservoir was constructed as part of the project. The reservoir and associated piped distribution infrastructure help maintain a more reliable supply of treated water across the project coverage area.

Advanced Monitoring and Reliable Operation

Despite being implemented within a relatively limited project footprint, the Surface Water Treatment Plant incorporates modern monitoring and operational systems.

The facility is continuously monitored through a state-of-the-art water quality laboratory, a remote monitoring and data transfer system, and round-the-clock closed-circuit camera surveillance. These systems support the monitoring of water quality and operational performance.

Generators have also been installed at the SWTP to support continuous operation and help ensure an uninterrupted water supply.

Water Supply for Rohingya and Host Communities

The project coverage includes Rohingya Camp 26, Rohingya Camp 27 and surrounding host community areas.

As part of the water distribution infrastructure, Tap Stands are being installed to enable regular access to treated water for both the Rohingya community and host communities. The integrated reservoir and piped water supply system helps strengthen water accessibility in an area where sustainable and reliable water infrastructure is critically important.
