Project Description
The Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) for Supporting Water Supply at Bakkhali, Cox's Bazar City is an important water infrastructure project developed to strengthen the supply of treated water for Cox's Bazar Municipality and surrounding areas.
Implemented under the Emergency Assistance Project (EAP), the project was undertaken by the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under Grant No. 0582. The project was constructed through the AWCL-Green Dot Limited Joint Venture, contributing to the development of essential water supply infrastructure in one of Bangladesh's most strategically important and rapidly growing urban areas.
The project includes a Surface Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 1,000 m³ per hour, providing significant water treatment capacity to support the growing water demand of Cox's Bazar Municipality.
The plant uses water collected from the Bakkhali River as its primary source. A dedicated pontoon-based water intake system has been developed to collect raw surface water and transfer it to the treatment facility.
By utilizing a surface water source and integrating an appropriate intake and treatment system, the project provides an important alternative to groundwater-based water supply solutions.
The treatment process incorporates a Rapid Sand Filtration System, designed as a key component of the overall surface water treatment process.
Raw water collected from the Bakkhali River is transferred through the water intake and treatment infrastructure, where the filtration system supports the removal of suspended particles and other impurities as part of the treatment process.
The 1,000 m³/h capacity treatment plant and its associated filtration infrastructure provide a substantial water treatment solution to support municipal water supply requirements.
The primary coverage area of the project is the Municipality area of Cox's Bazar, where increasing population and water demand require sustainable and reliable water supply infrastructure.
The SWTP contributes to strengthening the municipal water supply system by creating additional capacity for the treatment of surface water. The project supports the broader objective of improving access to treated water for urban communities and surrounding areas.
